THOR Race Report

Nagl reclaims MXGP red plate with solid Valkenswaard performance.

On fire in this year’s MXGP class, Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl secured his fourth podium result in five races to end his weekend second overall and with it regain control of the championship lead.

An unfortunate crash while running strongly in Saturday’s qualification put Todd Waters on the back foot in MXGP. Starting from an unfavourable 32nd gate pick for each race, the young Australian dug deep to fight his way back into the top 15 each time out. Despite still feeling the effects of his crash, Waters placed 14th in both races.

Tyla Rattray upheld the honour of the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team as he raced to sixth place in the GP of Europe at Valkenswaard in The Netherlands on his return from injury.

The unfortunate absence of team leader Ryan Villopoto, still in severe pain from injuries sustained in Italy, left Tyla alone to defend KRT honour, but he responded superbly to the challenge.

Jordi Tixier raced to second place making it the second consecutive podium finish for the reigning world champion as he shrugs off an unfortunate start to the campaign in the early rounds of the series.

Teammate Dylan Ferrandis battled hard against adversity to retain second place in the series standings. The French youngster recovered strongly to finish fourth in the Qualifying race despite a few "moments" on the rugged track and his first race effort as he charged from an initial eighth place to cross the finish line in fourth position was a credit to his determination. After another forceful ride from eleventh place on lap one to third place at the chequered flag did not bring the expected rewards as officialdom was unhappy with a race incident and demoted Dylan ten places to thirteenth in the official classification.

After a difficult Qualification Thomas Convington responded positively on race day and raced to solid fourteenth and twelfth placings to retain his top ten series ranking.

The FIM Motocross World Championship continues with the MXGP of Spain in Talavera de la Reina on May 10.
