KEMEA Yamaha Yamalube Race Report GP1 Losail, Qatar
Last weekend the 2016 MXGP world championship started on the International circuit of Losail in Qatar. Located in the middle of the desert, the riders traditionally ride under the lights, which makes the track extra tricky for the riders.
In MX2 Brent Vandoninck managed to get a fifth overall finish. Despite a very short preparation time due to an arm injury Brent crossed the line in 8th place in the first moto. In the second moto the young Belgian impressed a lot passing 3 riders in the final laps to end up 4th in the second race of the day.
Benoit too had a top 5 speed all weekend long, but he couldn’t get this on the results sheets after technical issues and a small crash. In the first race he had to leave the race with technical issues while battling for 6th. In the second moto he had another good start but in an attempt to pass Tonkov he took a slick rut and lost control. He rejoined the race in 13th but still managed to come back to 8th. Overall Benoit was classified 13th.
"I’m really happy on this GP! I had no idea where I was as I didn’t race much as preparation. I was convinced I had a good winter, but you only know for sure once you are at the first GP. In the first moto I rode really tight and got tired pretty early. I was a bit lucky some people in front of me crashed. The second moto I felt like I was at training. I rode really good and once I got by Tonkov I did a final sprint. In te end I finished fourth, which was super good."
"This ain’t what I had in mind to start the season. The speed was there all weekend long and I felt comfortable, but luck wasn’t at my side. In the first race I was battling for 6th when I had to withdraw, so those are some valuable points gone. In the second moto I was once again doing well, but I lost control in a slippery rut. I managed to come back pretty good but it could have been better."
