Thor Race Report

Thor race report: Cairoli podiums in Mantova.

The penultimate round of the FIM Motocross world championship held in Mantova, Italy would see thousands of fans turn out for what can be considered the tightest MXGP championship in decades.

This would also be one of the last times to see nine times world champ, Antonio Cairoli, compete at the highest level as the Italian legend hangs up his boots at the end of the championship.

With 3 points separating the top 3 riders in the championship, the gate dropped for the first moto and Cairoli was immediately in the mix.  He snuck into second place on the opening lap and trailed Febvre for a while until Gasjer made his way past.  The Slovenian would later be docked 5 positions by race officials and a hard charging Herlings claimed second place with Cairoli inheriting 3rd.  Jorge Prado kept out of trouble and cruised home in 6th.

Jorge Prado grabbed his 16th hole-shot of the year but was quickly passed by Jeffrey Herlings and then by Febvre on lap 3.  He held off team-mate Cairoli for a while and kept a charging Gasjer at bay for some time until he got passed.  Cairoli would also move to 4th which gave him 3rd overall for the race.

There was a bit of MX2 mayhem in the first turns with Mattia Guadagnini getting caught up in the middle.  He quickly made some moves but then high sided and went down, having to remount and give chase once again. He eventually climbed his way back to 12th.

A better start in the second moto place Guadagnini in 3rd.  A few laps in he was passed by newly crowned MX2 champ, Renaux.  A charging Jed Beaton traded paint with Guadagnini with a few laps to go relegating the rookie to 5th.

The 18th and final round of the championship will take place on Wednesday 10th November.
