Thor Race Report

Thor race report: Prado gains valuable points in Riola Sardo MXGP in championship hunt.

The 10th round of the FIM Motocross world championship has seen a shake up of events at a tough and treacherous Riola Sardo circuit in Sardinia.

Antonio Cairoli was ruled out of the race after a major crash in the morning timed qualification session.  Luckily The 9 time world champ did not sustain any serious injuries but still chose to sit out the two motos.

Young gun, Jorge Prado, showed his sand riding skills when he trailed Jeffrey Herlings in moto 1. The KTM duo annihilated the rest of the field with Prado settling for a strong second place. Brian Bogers was next THOR man home with a solid 5th place while team-mate Pauls Jonass went down in the opening stages and had an uphill battle to come through the pack to salvage 13th spot.

Prado drew first blood in moto 2 when he grabbed the hole-shot and led the pack in front of Herlings and Fevbre, A factory KTM tussle had spectators on their feet with Herlings trying everything he could to get past the Spaniard. Prado held the sand master at bay for 20 mins blocking every attack that came from the Dutchman. In a do-or-die manoeuver, Herlings eventually got past and would take the double victory in front of Prado and Fevbre.  Jonass redeemed himself with a solid 6th place with team-mate Bogers cruising home in 9th. With previous championship leader Tim Gasjer coming into the event with a broken collarbone, the Slovenian has lost the red plate to Herlings with Prado trailing by a mere 12 points.  It’s still anyone’s championship.

Thor’s MX2 title protagonist, Mattia Guadagnini had a day he would rather forget. The MX2 rookie had a solid first moto where he secured 3rd spot.  Unfortunately, things would go wrong for the Italian in moto 2. After going down on the opening lap after challenging for the lead, Guadagnini would go down a second time but would not be able to rejoin the race. He still holds second in the championship standings but has lost a crucial amount of points to championship leader, Maxime Renaux.

The MXON takes place on the 26th of September and then round 11 of the championship resumes in Teutschenthal on 03 October.
