Round 9 of the FIM Motocross world championship, the second of a double header held in Afyon - Turkey, has seen some nail-biting racing as the championship enters the second half of the season.

Thor’s Antonio Cairoli had spectators on the edge of their seats as the 9-time world champ charged from just inside the top ten at the start of the moto. While team-mate Jorge Prado grabbed the hole-shot and lead for 4 laps, the Spaniard made a mistake that would cost him heavily. Cairoli went from 4th place to 2nd in the space of a few turns in the final stages of the race to challenge Herlings right to the checkered flag for an unbelievable show of tenacity.  Pauls Jonass rounded out the top 5 with a solid ride while Prado limped home just outside the points.

Prado grabbed the hole-shot once again in moto 2 and showed his grit as he continued to lead with a gaggle of riders on his heels. The pain from the first moto crash would eventually take its toll as he lost a few spots.  Cairoli once again moved through the pack to secure 3rd behind Herlings and a revitalized Gajser. Jonass showed consistency with a 6th place finish with Bogers rounding out the top 10.

MX2 rookie, Mattia Guadagnini, kept his MX2 championship hopes alive to gain 3rd overall for the GP.   Coming from 5th in the first moto, Gudagnini took his time to get into a race rhythm and by the halfway point he moved into 3rd to give chase to the leading duo of Renaux and Vialle. The gap was too big and he had to settle for 3rd. A similar start in moto 2 would leave Guadagnini with plenty of work once again. A small mistake on the final lap dashed any hopes of finishing the second moto near the podium however his 3-6 score would be enough to secure 3rd overall.

Team’s and riders head back to Europe with a weekend off before round 10 takes place in Sardegna at the demanding sand circuit of Riola Sardo on the 19 September.
