Thor Race Report

Thor race report: Prado second in Turkey and closes in on championship lead.

After a welcomed summer break, it was back to racing for round 8 of the FIM Motocross world championship, held at the purpose built Afyonkarahisar circuit in Turkey, the first of a double header.

Thor’s Jorge Prado, looked impressive all day, posting pole position in the morning timed practice and setting the tone.  He grabbed the hole-shot in moto 1 and set the pace fending off challenges from Febvre and then Herlings later on the moto.  Herlings would eventually make a pass stick with 5 mins to go to take the victory. Pauls Jonass and a stellar ride by passing Gajser, Coldenhoff and then Febvre to take a well deserved podium finish in 3rd spot behind Prado.

Another hole-shot for Prado in moto 2 would see him lead once again.  Gajser was better placed this time and ousted Prado from the lead midway.  After a ding dong battle between team-mate Cairoli and Prado, Herlings managed to slip by when Cairoli hit a haybale.  Jonas had a massive get off after hitting a breaking bump and grabbing a hand full of throttle through the advertising boards. He was luckily unscathed.  Prado held on to 3rd for second overall and has closed the Gap to Gajser by two points in the MXGP championship hunt.

Thor’s rookie MX2 racer, Mattia Guadagnini narrowly missed out on the overall podium.  A strong ride in Moto 1 would see the young Italian pick off a handful of spots to make his way into second place at the checkered flag.  A similar start in moto 2 left Guadagnini with loads of work to do again. He hounded 3rd place man, Beaton for most of the moto and in the dying moments tried to make a move but lost out after a small mistake on the final lap to finish 4th.

Guadagnini still holds second in the MX2 championship standings.

Afyonkarahisar will host round 9 on Wednesday to complete the double header in Turkey.
