Thor Race Report

Thor race report: Prado wins moto 2 in MXGP and Guadagnini 3rd overall in MX2 in Latvia.

The Zelta Zirgs race circuit in Kegums, Latvia has welcomed race fans for round 7 of the FIM MX World championship series.  The loamy sand circuit with hard underground is a 45 min drive east of the capital city of Riga.

Jorge Prado had a rocket jump in moto 1 but was just ousted out of the hole-shot by Jeffrey Herlings in the 180 degree hairpin first turn.  Cairoli was positioned in 5th for the opening laps and took some time to eat away at the deficit.  He would eventually pass Prado for 3rdwhile hometown favourite, Pauls Jonass would cross the line in 6th for a solid moto.  Brian Bogers rounded out the top 10.

As rain started to pour for the second moto the slippery underground would catch out a lot of riders.  Febvre was the first to fall victim as he handed the lead to Jorge Prado.  The Spaniard never put a foot wrong the entire moto and even with the pressure of Herlings behind him he held onto the win.  Cairoli was also caught out while in 4th place and had to remount on the second lap to fight back to 6th spot, just behind Brian Bogers who matched his season best result.  Pauls Jonass had a nightmare moto with a few crashes and nasty take out by another rider. He eventually limped home in 15th.

Mattia Guadagnini timed the gate perfectly in both motos to grab the hole-shot and lead.  In moto 1, he eventually had to hand the lead to a fast-charging Renaux to finish second in front of Geerts.  In moto 2 he led again from the hole-shot for about 5 laps before Renaux once again took over the lead.  Geerts would also make a move for second which saw Guadagnini and Geerts tie on points with the second moto being decisive, meaning that Guadagnini would have to settle for 3rd place overall on the podium.  He now trails Renaux by 34 points in the MX2 championship.

With the Finnish GP being cancelled due to government Covid restrictions, Turkey will now host a double header on the 5th and 8th of September.
