Thor Race Report

Thor race report: Jonass podiums in Lommel sand.

The 6th round of the FIM MXGP championship has produced a podium finish for Thor’s Pauls Jonass with scattered rain showers during the day making the Belgian circuit rough and treacherous which put man and machine to the test.

Pauls Jonass grabbed a good start in moto 1 and slotted into 3rd in the opening lap behind fast starters Febvre and Herlings.  He would hold this position with two laps to go when Cairoli snuck past to claim 3rd spot and claim some valuable championship points over Gajser.  Prado was bogged down in the first turn and had to come from a far way back to salvage 6th spot at the checkered flag.

Taking advantage of another good start, Jonass soon found himself in the lead on the second lap where he set a fast pace and looked to be comfortable out front.  Febvre found a second wind with 5 minutes left on the clock and regained the lead with Jonass and Prado battling over second and third.  The Latvian stood his ground and claimed second which would give him a well deserved 3rd overall for the GP.  Cairoli came home in 7th and now trails Gajser by 9 points in the championship.

In the MX2 championship, Thor’s Mattia Guadagnini had a day he would rather want to forget.  A crash in the first turn left the rookie Italian on the ground however he remounted and gave chase from last position to cross the line in 14th.   Hoping on a better start for moto 2, Guadagnini was a bit tentative going round the first turn and emerged just outside the top 10. He lost a few spots but then regained some to finish 10th. He still holds 2nd in the championship standings.

No time to rest as riders now travel to Latvia for round 7 on the 8 August in Kegums, 40 mins east of Riga.
