Thor Race Report

Cairoli wins in Matterly Basin while Guadagnini takes career first moto win.

Round 2 of the FIM Motocross World championship has seen some thrilling racing at the Matterly Basin track, located close to Winchester in the south of England.  A 5000 limited crowd were lucky to escape much of the predicted rain with track conditions making racing fast and furious.

9-time World champion, Antonio Cairoli drew first blood with a great start in moto 1 as he hugged a tight line to edge out team-mate Prado and take over the lead.  The THOR duo controlled the moto from start to finish taking maximum champion points.  Pauls Jonass had a strong ride to recover from a poor start to finish 6th only 16 seconds adrift.

With light rain falling for moto 2, track conditions would become a little more slippery however that did not stop Prado and Cairoli by grabbing great starts to go 1-2 at the start of moto 2.  Cairoli quickly made his move to lead while Prado lost his rhythm and slowly slid down the standings.  A dog fight between Cairoli, Febvre and Gajser would ensue with Cairoli eventually having to give up the lead to settle for 3rd.  The wise move would hand the Italian legend his 93 career GP win and the overall victory for the day.  Prado would eventually be passed by a charging Jonass whose consistent 6-6 score gave him 6th overall with Prado coming home in 7th.

There was even more celebrating for the Factory KTM Decarli Racing team with young gun Mattia Guadagnini grabbing his first ever MX2 Moto victory with a stunner second moto.  The rookie grabbed the hole-shot and never put a foot wrong, controlling the race from the front.  His 4-1 score landed him on the second step of the podium, making it another career first for the youngster.

Riders head back to mainland Europe for round 3 which will take place at the historical Maggiora circuit in Italy on the 4th July.
