Cairoli defends 2nd in the standings!

The penultimate round of the FIM MXGP held in Trentino, Italy witnessed the crowning of the new 2020 MXGP World champ in Tim Gajser, as Antonio Cairoli fought hard to defend his second place in the championship standings.

The second leg of the final triple header in the championship got off to a good start for Cairoli. The Sicilian settled in second spot in the opening laps and looked to be focusing on the leader, Jeremy Sewer, when a small mistake was punished harshly on the take-off of a jump which forced Cairoli to remount and slot into 6th position. He remained in 6th till the end of the moto.

Grabbing the hole-shot in Moto 2, his advantage was soon disregarded as the race was red-flagged for a downed rider in the first turn.  The re-start was not as advantageous for the nine-time world champ as he emerged in 5th position.  The track had become slick and tricky so Cairoli chose not to take any risks and settled behind Desalle to finish 5th.  Ivo Monticelli was having a blast coming through the pack.  The Standing construct Factory GasGas rider made some impressive passes, laying it all on the line as he crossed the line in 8th to secure 10th overall for the day.

With only one round remaining, Cairoli defends second in the championship by 4 points over Jeremy Sewer.  The 18th and final round will take place on Sunday 8th November for the final time at the Pietramurata Circuit.
