GEERTS TAKES SILVER MEDAL

Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha rider Jago Geerts clinched the silver medal with Team Belgium at the Motocross of Nations in Assen. It's his second medal in 2019 after finishing third in the FIM World Championship MX2.

It was pouring rain all weekend long in Assen. The sand track at the famous TT-circuit was transformed into a swamp and the race turned into a survival for man and machine.

Geerts didn't get a good start in the first race (MXGP+MX2), but gradually moved up from 29th into the top 10 on the flooded track. A great job against the more powerful 450-bikes. The teenager was on his way to 10th place when he was stopped by a mechanical issue, three laps from the end.

Geerts was eager to take revenge in the second race (MX2+Open) and was flying on his YZ250F after a poor start (30th). After six laps the Yamaha rider was already in tenth position. And he kept going like a rocket, finishing seventh and best MX2 rider.

This result, combined with the decent performances of Van Horebeek (6+6) and Strijbos (17+11) puts Belgium on the second step. The first podium for Belgium since Ernée in 2015.

"Our goal was to get on the podium and here we are. But it wasn't an easy job in these conditions. We were a bit unsure after my DNF in the first race, but all three of us responded well in the second and third race. It feels really good to be on the podium after the terrible Nations in Red Bud last year.
A bronze medal in the World Championship and now a silver medal in the Nations: 2019 was a great year for me."
