Viladoms kicks off 9th Dakar in Buenos Aires.
After completeting the compulsory technical controls, Jordi Viladoms has kicked off his 9th consecutive Dakar, this time in Buenos Aires where the Spaniard is eager to fight for another podium result.
The first stage has got under way between Buenos Aires and Villa Carlos Paz, consisting of 838 kilometers but with only 175km of special. 161 participants departed at 05.00 am.
Viladoms crossed the finish line with a total time of 1h22m42s, a little over 3 minutes adrift of Stage 1 winner Sam Sunderland. After the short special of today a much more demanding day will be met both technically and with navigation, for stage 2 tomorrow. A liason of 107km will give way to the special, of 518 miles and take riders from Villa Carlos Paz to the bivouac located in San Juan.
"It was a very easy and quick special, in my opinion with much to lose and little to gain. I tried to gradually find the pace, as usual, thinking about tomorrow's stage where we will find a special with a lot of navigation and over 500 kilometers. The important thing is keeping the gap of the leader close and although the result was not quite good I'm not that concerned - I think I'm in a good position for tomorrow."
