THOR RACE REPORT: Cooper Webb the star at Charlotte MXGP.

Yamalube Star Racing Yamaha’s Cooper Webb, won his first ever MX2 Grand Prix at the penultimate round of the FIM MXGP series held at Charlotte Speedway complex over the weekend.  The newly crowned AMA 250 Outdoor champ went head to head with Jeffrey Herlings and after an amazing come-from-behind second moto, Webb passed the Dutchman to take victory and with it the overall MX2 win.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team's Clement Desalle and Jordi Tixier scored top eight results. For the first time in its history the Charlotte speedway complex met a Grand Prix that finally was a one day event as hurricane Hermine forced the organisers to abandon the usual two day format in favour of a one day programme, with two practice sessions and both races on Saturday.

Clement Desalle, who had won the Dutch GP six days earlier, was hampered by relatively poor starts in his attempt to repeat the feat and had to be content with fifth overall in Charlotte. After advancing a couple of positions on the opening lap of race one he spent most of the race in sixthposition before gaining one place three laps from the end, but race two proved more difficult after he overshot the first turn and found it difficult to regain lost places. The Belgian eventually finished seventh to classify fifth overall in the GP and remains eighth in the championship standings.

Teammate Jordi Tixier set sixth best time in the timed practice session but started poorly and was then pushed back even further to eleventh in a hectic opening lap; recovering his rhythm after a couple of laps he advanced to seventh at the chequered flag. After holding seventh position through the opening laps of race two but lost one position mid-moto to finish eighth in the moto and in the overall result on the day.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s MXGP star Max Nagl rounded out his participation in round 17 of the series with two top ten moto finishes for ninth overall. Holding on to fifth for most of the opening moto, Nagl suffered a fall five laps before the end and had to settle for 10th. With his FC 450machine powering him to a convincing holeshot the German went on to finish moto two in ninth position.

The final round of the series takes place in Glen Helen, California next weekend 10-11 SEPT.
